Description

A creamy, delicious strawberry milkshake smoothie that perfectly balances the rich texture of a milkshake with the fresh, nutritious qualities of a smoothie. This recipe features the perfect strawberry-to-dairy ratio, strategic freezing techniques, and carefully selected supporting ingredients for a drink that’s both satisfying and healthy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled (or 1½ cups frozen strawberries)
  • 1 frozen banana, sliced
  • ¾ cup vanilla Greek yogurt
  • ½ cup milk of choice
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 56 ice cubes (only if using fresh strawberries)
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon chia seeds or ground flaxseed

Instructions

  1. If using fresh strawberries, freeze half of them: wash, hull, slice in half, and freeze on a parchment-lined baking sheet for at least 2 hours.
  2. Layer ingredients in your blender: liquids first (milk and vanilla extract), then soft ingredients (yogurt and fresh strawberries), and frozen items last (frozen strawberries, banana, and ice if needed).
  3. Blend on low speed for 15-20 seconds until ingredients begin breaking down.
  4. Gradually increase to medium speed for 15 seconds.
  5. Blend on high for 30-45 seconds until completely smooth.
  6. Adjust consistency if needed: add 1-2 tablespoons of milk if too thick or more frozen strawberries/ice if too thin.
  7. Pour into chilled glasses and garnish with a strawberry slice and mint leaf if desired.

Notes

  • The quality of strawberries greatly impacts flavor – use local, peak-season berries when possible.
  • Frozen banana adds creaminess without the need for ice cream or heavy cream.
  • Add a pinch of salt to enhance perceived sweetness without additional sugar.
  • For extra strawberry flavor, add a tablespoon of strawberry jam or 1-2 freeze-dried strawberries.
  • Nutritional boosts can be added without compromising taste: spinach, chia seeds, flaxseed, collagen powder, or avocado.
  • Chill glasses in the freezer for 15 minutes before serving for the best experience.
  • Smoothie can be stored in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
